Mustangs (re)Unite

From the Head of School

November 13, 2020

Dear Breck Families,

Careful planning, consistent execution, and good fortune allowed us to start school on August 31 and remain in our hybrid model until this point in the year. We know that each day on campus is a gift. We also know that Hennepin County COVID-19 numbers are rising faster than predicted. And, while we have not experienced community spread on campus, we have seen rising numbers of close contact cases, absenteeism, community members awaiting testing results, as well as small but rising lab-confirmed positive cases. We must respond to this ever-changing pandemic and make decisions that will help keep our community safe.

We have always known that flexibility was a critical component of schooling this year. We are immensely grateful for your constant support and recognize that your partnership is a critical component of our COVID-19 response. This communication is intended to provide further guidance by division as to how we are proceeding for the next few weeks.

In keeping with MDH recommendations and in consultation with our consulting physician, we have made the decision to modify our instructional model based on these factors:

  • Hennepin County numbers and any orders by the Governor.
  • Breck School numbers.
  • Our ability to staff our current model.
  • Our ability to respond to rising suspected and confirmed COVID positive cases.

Breck’s upcoming changes to instructional models:
Lower School: On-campus

  • Preschool through 4th grade will remain on-campus daily for as long as conditions allow. While we are hopeful this will remain in place until the winter break, we are prepared to move the LS to distance learning should the consideration factors, or an Executive Order from the Governor, dictate the move.
  • In the event a family’s risk factors preclude on-campus learning, Lower School families have the option of selecting remote learning starting December 1. Please work directly with the LS office and your child’s teacher.
  • We understand that families may have to make accommodations should we have to move Lower School to a distance learning model. We will continue to communicate regularly and barring required quarantine, we will work to provide as much transition time as possible. However, we ask families to please be prepared for the possibility of a short-notice transition.
  • Lower School families can expect further communication from Breck prior to the Thanksgiving Break.

Grades 5 & 6: Hybrid model

  • Grades 5 & 6 will remain in their current hybrid Blue & Gold cohort model on campus for as long as conditions allow.
  • Like Lower School, we will continue to communicate regularly but we ask families to be prepared for the possibility of a short-notice transition to distance learning.

Grades 7 - 12: Distance learning

  • Starting Thursday, November 19, all students in grades 7 - 12 will learn remotely through our distance learning model.
  • Some factors that impacted this decision are:
    • Recommendations by the Minnesota Department of Health
    • The largest number of cases awaiting testing is in our older students.
    • Contact tracing has proven to be more complex for the Upper School student body.
    • A growing number of US students are electing to learn remotely.

As we shared in previous communications, we will provide our faculty a day of planning and preparation in order to make the necessary changes in all divisions. There will be no classes for students on Wednesday, November 18, while teachers in grades PS - 6 prepare for a hybrid instructional model and teachers in grades 7 - 12 prepare for full distance learning. I am in awe of our faculty and staff who have worked tirelessly to meet the challenges of providing the Breck experience in any model and under any circumstance. I have never seen a group of teachers work harder in my entire career.

Our return to campus
Our goal throughout this time has been to prioritize student learning on campus. Looking ahead, we will use our same decision making metrics to determine our return to campus. It is our goal to return to our hybrid model for Middle and Upper Schools and full attendance in Lower School on our scheduled return date of January 4.

Breck’s increased measures
Regardless of the instructional model, we ask that you help ensure that if and when students/families are on campus, we comply with these requirements:

  • One symptom, even with an alternative diagnosis, should preclude students from coming to campus.
  • Students must follow the designated quarantine or COVID-19 testing protocols as outlined in the Minnesota Department of Health Decision Tree.
  • Students who participate in large group gatherings or activities where masking and social distancing are not enforced should quarantine and not come to campus.
  • We continue to discuss the implications around athletics; information will be forthcoming for our winter season.

Dates Summarized

  • Wednesday, November 18: No school for all students — Faculty planning and prep
  • Thursday, November 19: First day of distance learning for all students in grades 7-12
  • Wednesday, November 25: No school; campus closed
  • Monday, November 30: No school for all students — Faculty planning and prep

Thank you for your commitment to Breck and for your unwavering support.

Warmly,

Natalia Rico Hernández, Ed.D.
Head of School

Feedback Themes

Throughout distance learning and since the creation of the design and compliance team, we've collected feedback through surveys and interviews with our students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Themes

Our 2020-2021 Academic Year

Our Mustangs (re)Unite plan is centered around community and support, deeper learning, and real-world application of knowledge. We are building on the best of Breck as we generalize excellence, design for flexibility, and reimagine the Breck experience.

Our current model

Hybrid

We will begin the year in a hybrid model for the start of the academic year. This decision was based on current information and community spread of COVID-19 in Minnesota, transmission rates of children ages 0-18, health and safety practices to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in schools, as well as educational research for students preschool through grade 12. We are pleased that this plan also aligns with the Safe Learning Plan released July 30 by Governor Walz. Our hybrid model allows for fewer students on campus in order to maintain proper social social distancing, reduced class sizes, and increased attention to student and family needs.

Throughout this model, we will have all Lower School students on campus daily. Lower School students will be in cohorts of nine students or fewer with one teacher in the classroom guiding instruction. Specialist instruction like music, PE, art, and world language are all still important elements in their daily schedules.

Middle School and Upper School will be split into Blue and Gold Cohorts for our hybrid learning model.

  • Students with last names beginning with A-La will be in the Blue Cohort
  • Students with last names beginning with Le-Z will be in Gold Cohort
  • Wednesday attendance will alternate based on grade levels in MS/US

Other Operating Models throughout the Year

Our Mustangs (re)Unite plan is built around three main models while allowing for flexibility between them throughout the year. While we want nothing more than to return to normal operations as soon as possible, we will approach the year with the health and safety of our students and community as our priority. It is important to note that we are prepared to increase or decrease student population on campus as the situation allows.

Responsive to community feedback. Driven by research and practice. Built by Breck Faculty.

Levels of Decision Making

Our paramount priority is the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff. As we make decisions, we will lean into:

  • Research-based approach
  • Prioritize transparent and regular communication
  • Effective training and education
  • Reducing risk

Below, we have provided a framework for our decision making as we move between models and levels of distance learning and on-campus instruction. While our reopening model accounts for Lower School on campus and 50% capacity of Middle and Upper School, we may increase or decrease the student population on campus based on the below criteria.

Level External Environment/COVID Conditions Learning at Breck

In all circumstances, we will consider recommendations and/or directives from the CDC, MDH, MDE, and the Governor's office to determine our instructional model.

Case counts per 10,000 are as noted by https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/stats/wschool.pdf

Understanding that we cannot mitigate every risk, we are working hard to create our school community to be as low risk as possible. Students, families, faculty, and staff will need to both assume a level of risk of their own and partner with Breck to proactively mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in their families and homes.

Reducing Risk

A clear understanding of the risk level of our shared environment and our structured response to these risks can provide an increased sense of confidence and calm as we return to educational and work activities over the coming year. Our school environment is considered “medium” risk for exposure to COVID-19 based on authoritative criteria from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).  Our goal is to use a hierarchy of control measures to further reduce that risk as far as possible so that our shared environment truly becomes a “low” risk environment where people can feel safe and focus on learning and growth. This hierarchy of controls includes:

  • Engineering - i.e., building use and ventilation, facility maintenance, and repairs
  • Administrative - i.e., reduced class sizes, decreased time in common spaces, and a commitment to physical distancing
  • Personal Protective Equipment - i.e., wearing of masks, screening, reduced sharing of supplies

Our Compliance Planning Team is composed of working groups focused on meeting the following goals and objectives:

  • Plan and implement strategies for physical distancing and reducing density. This includes, but is not limited to, maximizing usable space, facility zoning (e.g., one-way hallways), facility modifications/layout, and maximizing ventilation
  • Plan and implement wellness, health safety, screening and preventative hygiene measures. These measures include increased health staffing, sick bay, screening procedures, building ingress/egress, PPE, hand washing, preventative hygiene, etc.
  • Plan and implement cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting protocols in compliance with CDC and MDH guidelines and in consultation with public health experts. Different protocols for different scenarios will be applicable (e.g., if a positive case is reported in a classroom).

How you can help

As we shared above, the partnership between the school and our families is critical to keeping our community healthy and safe. Here is how you can help at home:

  • Monitor your child for symptoms.
  • Encourage frequent hand washing and healthy hand washing techniques.
  • Avoid large-group gatherings outside of the Breck community.
  • Continue regular well-child visits to your pediatrician or healthcare provider.
  • Practice wearing a face-covering during family outings and activities in public.
  • Monitor your child's mental health by providing space to ask questions and talk freely about COVID-19 and other concerns.
  • Connect with our Student Support Team. Our counselors, school nurse, and chaplains are available to help and support students.
