Two students selected to participate in Honor Band Festival
Ansel Smith '20 and James Hicks '23 were selected to participate in the annual St. Thomas Honor Band Festival held October 14 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Ansel and James are both members of Breck's Upper School Symphonic Winds ensemble.
The top students from 43 schools from in and around the metro area were represented in this elite ensemble, directed by guest conductor Darío Sotelo from São Paulo, Brazil. Sotelo is the President of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.
Concert repertoire consisted of Suites transcribed from traditional Brazilian folk tunes, as well as a beautiful soundscape by Eric Whitacre. The honor band coincides with St Thomas' artist in residency program, where each year guest conductors from abroad take the podium for the day and work with students on pieces that represent their country or region.
