2021 Alumni Men's Soccer Game
On Wednesday, July 21, Breck welcomed back 51 alumni to take part in the first annual Alumni Soccer game. The Breck Alumni All-Stars were composed of 36 former players from various years between 1994 and 2019, and they played against 15 recent graduates from the class of 2021 who were the heart of this year's section championship team. In a game that was dubbed “fresh legs vs. young legs,” the extra 20 bodies on the All-Stars certainly played a role in the final outcome. The All-Stars won a hard-fought, highly competitive, 80-minute battle, by a score of 3-2.
The first half featured only one goal, which former team Captain Will Martin ‘00 scored on a beautiful header. The second half featured a flurry of goals, including a successful PK from TJ Varecka ‘94, scores by Coleman McNally '21, and this year’s team MVP, Walsh Kern ‘21. But the shot of the match went to Max Oppenheimer '11 who put in the deciding goal. Teammate Jay Phillips ‘13 said of the impressive strike, “yeah, it looked like Max was still Max.” Breck’s all-time leader in wins and minutes, goalkeeper Hudson Haecker '19, was awarded “Man of the Match.” Breck’s all-time leading scorer, Miles Marmo ‘06 was quoted as saying, “all of us old guys leaving with
The 2021 Alumni Team was captained by Lucas Lewin-Mills '21, and coached by Gavin Luebke '21. The Alumni All-Stars were captained by Joe Ginsburg '11 and coached by Davis Harrington '17 and Gordie Rudd '17. Longtime Breck Coach George Stuempfig even as the game’s lone referee.
