Breck’s Advanced Science Research (ASR) students have had an outstanding start to 2025, demonstrating their dedication and innovation in scientific research at multiple competitions.

In February, nine ASR students traveled to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD, to present their projects at the North Central Regional Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Two Breck projects earned top honors:

  • Allie Sigmond ('26) and Benny Marmor ('26) took third place with their project, Health Evaluation Robot for Basil – HERB: A modular robotic system for detecting nutrient deficiency in greenhouse basil.
  • Selena Qiao ('26) and Abby Endres ('25) secured second place with their project, Turf Trouble: Does the DEET in bug repellent really kill grass? Year II. Their success qualifies them to present at the National Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium in April.

Selena and Allie hold trophies from their second and third place awards at the JSHS competition.

More recently, Breck Middle and Upper School students excelled at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair, where the school entered 23 projects (9 Middle School and 14 Upper School), representing a total of 34 students. The competition was fierce, with only the top 20% of projects advancing to the Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair—and an impressive 18 Breck projects qualified!

A Published Researcher Among Us

Adding to the excitement, Mina Adabag ('23) has been included as a contributing author on a recently published peer-reviewed journal article—a rare and remarkable achievement for a high school student. Her work stems from her ASR project during the 2022-2023 school year. You can read the full article here.

These achievements highlight the dedication, curiosity, and hard work of our Breck students, as well as the incredible guidance provided by our faculty mentors. Congratulations to all who participated, and best of luck to those advancing to the next stages of competition!
