Cady Pirtle '19 was a featured speaker at Microsoft's DigiGirlz event April 26 in Edina. DigiGirlz is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that gives middle and high school girls the opportunity to explore careers in STEM and learn more about cutting-edge technology. Congratulations to Jordan Curtis '18! Jordan received an Honorable Mention in the American Composers Forum NextNotes Composition Competition this spring. There were 155 submissions to the competition from students across 35 states.  Jordan is an avid composer and has taken Music Theory 1, AP Music Theory, and Music Psychology at Breck in addition to being in the band. CONGRATULATIONS to all Breck chess players who played at this tournament that began last weekend at Breck School in the midst of an historic April snowstorm.   Breck's Elementary Team (Gr 4-6) are the 2018 State Champions gaining 1st Place (out of 56 teams), and Breck's Primary Team (PK-3) earned a 6th place trophy (out of 45 teams). Twenty-one juniors and seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society during a ceremony on April 18.  The Cum Laude Society was founded in 1906 and is a national society within independent schools in the U.S. Its purpose is to recognize academic excellence and achievement among students. According to national guidelines, to which Breck's chapter subscribes, a chapter may elect up to 10 percent of the junior class and up to 20 percent of the senior class to the Cum Laude Society. Twenty-eight students from Breck School’s Advanced Science Research program competed at the 50th Annual North Central Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held in Saint Paul, MN on March 24. About 95 students in grades 9-12 participated from Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, with the awards being announced April 10th in conjunction with the Minnesota State Science Fair. TréAllen Warner '18, Deirdre O'Neill ‘19, and Melinda Samaratunga '18 earned national recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing awards. Tré's poem "17 + Black" was awarded the American Voices Medal, which recognizes the top five "Best in Show" submissions from his category that most exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Noah Getnick '24 represented Breck in the Minnesota State Geo Bee on April 6 at Minnesota State University Mankato. There were over 500 schools who participated in this year's Geo Bee with only the top 100 students attending the state competition.  Students were split into five preliminary rounds of 20 students each. The end of Breck's formal spring break brought the return of faculty for a three-day training led by the Peter Clark Center for Mind, Brain and Education.
