Advanced History Research

To enhance the Breck community’s awareness of Breck’s place in history, as a tool to advance social justice, and as a means to teach history research skills, the Advanced History Research class is undertaking a three year examination of the history of Breck School. Founded in 1886, Breck School has produced thousands of graduates. Although each Breck students’ experience is unique, there are many common strands. Students in AHR select a strand of history related to the Breck experience, such as racial and gender integration, the origin of the girls’ hockey program, or the growth of our Chinese language program. The first portion of the class is spent researching the topic, culminating in a paper. Now equipped with background knowledge, students conduct interviews with relevant current students, alumni, faculty, and other community members.  These interviews, archived on this website, currently number over sixty. Students, faculty, and community members involved are grateful for the opportunity to build an archive that will be available and accessible for years to come. It is our hope and goal that learning from Breck’s past will help us to grow both as individuals and as a community as we strive to fulfill Breck’s Mission and Values.
