Susannah Brokl '03 BGH Interview

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Susannah Brokl, and I am Breck Class of 2003. I live in Pensacola, Florida now.

How many seasons did you play hockey for Breck?

I played six seasons on Varsity for the Mustangs.

What are your favorite memories of being a part of the Breck Girls’ Hockey Team?

I really enjoyed playing, but my favorite BGH memories come from my time as a coach.

When I returned to Breck to be an assistant for the Varsity team for two years, the program's pace had grown significantly. | I loved my time working with the team, and I am so grateful to see BGH win their first-ever MN State Championship from the bench at the Xcel Center.

Another favorite BGH memory was coaching the JV BGH team for two years with Madison Austad ’09 and Alyssa Saunders. We had so many great players with a broad spectrum of experience. Many of them went on to play for the varsity team. The girls worked hard and supported each other. There is nothing better than seeing a newer player score her first goal!

I also loved my last practice as a coach on the JV team. I had no idea that there was a tradition to dress up. The entire team came out of the locker room in costumes and face paint. I will never forget how much fun we had.

Who was a mentor or a teammate that had a lasting impact on you, and why?

Genny Furst ’94 and Meade McCarthy ’00.

Girls' hockey started in the State of Minnesota in 1994. Genny Furst, who had played boys’ hockey before girls’ hockey was sanctioned, was our best player. I went to all the games with my dad and wanted to be as good as she was when I got older. She made a significant impact on me.

Meade McCarthy ’00 was a star three-sport athlete at Breck. She was the BGH captain when I was a freshman. Meade was a natural leader with a great sense of humor. She brought everyone together and always led by example.

What lessons from your time as a Mustang student-athlete did you carry with you as you played collegiate hockey at Northeastern University and St. Olaf?

Playing at Breck taught me to set the bar high for myself and to go hard after what I want.

You were inducted into the Breck Athletic Hall of Fame in the Fall of 2024. What advice would you give the Breck girls' hockey team members as they look to leave a legacy at the school?

Always give your best effort every practice. Support your teammates on and off of the ice. Enjoy every minute you have wearing the blue & gold.

Are you still involved in hockey?

There is not much hockey for me now, although I had the opportunity to skate with BGH last week while visiting Minnesota. I live in Florida, which makes it hard to keep playing. I’ve tried roller hockey, but it isn’t the same.
