The transformation of Breck’s campus spaces is more than just aesthetics—furniture, fixtures, and equipment can profoundly impact the functionality and flow of a space. Prior to the installation of new furniture in the Salas Commons this summer, it was a space that lacked cohesion or purpose. Now, through thoughtful planning and intentional design choices led by Mike Thorson, Director of Facilities, the space has evolved into a more functional and welcoming environment for students and visitors alike. As Thorson notes, “We have beautiful spaces that are not highly functional spaces,” but with the right changes, the day-to-day experience of our students and faculty on campus is shifting.

Salas Commons often serves as an extension of learning spaces for Upper School students. As identified in Future Focus, Breck’s strategic plan, there is a need to “improve existing learning spaces to offer innovative and flexible learning opportunities across our campus.” While new furniture updates had been deferred in the past, the desire to elevate this key area took priority after the Admissions renovation last fall. When reimagining spaces like Salas Commons, Thorson strived to honor the architectural legacy of the building’s mid-century modern roots.  The aim was to preserve the character of these spaces while ensuring they are welcoming and practical for modern use by students, faculty, staff and families alike. By embracing the existing architecture of the Salas Commons, Thorson made design choices that respected the past and he created an environment where history and innovation meet.

Architecturally, Breck looks to the building’s mid-century style as a guide for future renovations, creating spaces that reflect both beauty and functionality. Numerous discussions with school leaders have centered on how best to utilize existing areas to support the school’s academic and community needs. Looking ahead, the Lower and Upper School learning spaces have seen transformation and work is in progress to bring this same approach to evolved learning environments to our Middle School classrooms and shared spaces.
