At Breck, we see athletics as an essential part of the educational journey, where students develop commitment, integrity, and teamwork, all while growing personally and preparing for challenges beyond the field. With 27 athletic programs—and more in the pipeline—our offerings range from Middle School through varsity sports, providing students with the chance to pursue excellence at every level. Breck’s 70+ teams are supported by 130 dedicated coaches who emphasize not only the pursuit of winning but also the personal growth of each athlete. This approach is woven into the fabric of Breck athletics, instilling values that students carry with them, enhancing their experience both within our community and beyond.

In 2022, we restructured our Middle School athletics program to expand opportunities for sixth-graders to participate in sports earlier. This initiative has been a great success, with over 80% of the sixth-grade students actively participating in sports. This early engagement builds a strong foundation for future success and leadership. Consistent with our belief that learning happens when personalization and press are balanced, we aim to ensure students are placed on teams where they will be appropriately challenged.  Breck Middle School, C squad, and JV teams place a heavier emphasis on participation and skill development.  Breck varsity teams place a heavier emphasis on competition with the goal of excelling at the league, section and state levels.

As we look ahead, we are reaffirming our commitment to multi-sport participation as a cornerstone of the Breck experience. One of the school’s key strengths is providing students with opportunities to engage in a variety of athletic disciplines, allowing them to develop leadership skills in diverse settings. This year, we will host an admissions event that highlights the value of being a well-rounded student-athlete. In an era where specialization is becoming more common, Breck continues to encourage a broad athletic experience. As Scott Wade notes, “Students at Breck have the chance to participate in multiple sports, refining their leadership skills in different arenas while contributing to Breck’s unique culture.” With 41.5% of students participating in two sports and nearly 15% in three, the impact of this approach is clear.

Looking ahead, we are excited about what’s on the horizon. Head Lacrosse Coach, Sam Adey's vision for Breck girls lacrosse extends beyond just the varsity squad — all the way to Middle School. The MS girls lacrosse program has grown exponentially in recent years, and Adey is excited about that growth for the future of the entire lacrosse program. In 2022, the program had just three girls. By 2023, it had jumped to 15. This past season, there were 24 girls who participated. "I see myself as not just the varsity head coach but a program head. I think having that feeder program into the Upper School is really integral to building a strong varsity program." Breck is forging a path for athletic excellence throughout the student experience, from Lower School athletic clinics to our State Championship teams, we are confident that our students will thrive in both competition and personal growth, fully prepared to lead with integrity.
