Future Focus: Five-Year Strategic Plan 2024-29

Students work with a teacher during a computer science class.

This strategic plan affirms what we value in a Breck education and propels our people, programs, and community to meet the complexity of our time.

Over the last five years we have leaned on our school’s enduring mission and values to successfully navigate some of education’s most challenging circumstances. From a global pandemic to a national racial reckoning that was sparked in our Twin Cities community, we acknowledged, learned, and evolved as a school. We are now positioned to leverage our strengths to amplify the course for an incomparable Breck experience for current and future generations of Breck students.

The work of the Future Focus plan is to set our strategic priorities so that Breck continuously strengthens our transformative student experience and is increasingly recognized as a national leader in independent school education.

This plan reflects extensive input gathered from students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, board, and other stakeholders through more than a year of conversation that began with a review of our mission and values. Here, we present our five year vision — one that prioritizes our challenging and innovative academic program, student well-being and connection, faculty excellence, and courageously commits to investing in the sustainability of our school’s mission.

At the heart of this plan is a single question...
How do we bring Breck’s enduring mission and core values into an increasingly complex world?
We know that our past and traditions are a source of strength, but they will not, in and of themselves, satisfy future challenges.

Future Focus Updates

Throughout the next five years, Breck faculty and staff are working to move forward a number of strategic initiatives annually. The below list captures our progress and shows how we are continuously moving this work forward.

Breck teachers in professional development
  • Nurture Inspiring Faculty

In response to our objective to become the premier school workplace where staff and faculty thrive in a culture of excellence and belonging, Breck has promoted pathways for teacher leadership and professional development and thereby increase retention.

Stampede
  • Promote Student Wellbeing

In Winter 2026, Breck sophomores began a new journey in leadership through Stampede, a seminar launched by the Melrose Center with support from the George Family Foundation. The curriculum empowers 10th graders to define their approach to leadership by focusing on self-knowledge, their core values and communication styles. As the cornerstone of Breck's emerging P-12 leadership curriculum, Stampede uses reflection and hands-on experience to help students understand how they can best show lead in the Breck community and beyond.

  • Nurture Inspiring Faculty

In response to our objective to enhance our national presence as a premier destination for exceptional candidates, Breck hosted the inaugural Breck Institute: Leading for Social & Academic Belonging in April. This gathering of educators from US-based and international schools explored how social and academic belonging reinforce one another across classrooms and community life. Visiting teams had dedicated time to reflect and strategize for improvement in their own contexts through facilitated discussions and breakout sessions led by faculty from the Melrose Center and Peter Clark Center for Mind Brain Education.

Breck educational leaders present at ISACS conference
  • Nurture Inspiring Faculty

In response to our objective to enhance our national presence as a premier destination for exceptional candidates, Breck this year has highlighted the Peter Clark Center and the Melrose Center at renowned conferences such as the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the ISACS Annual Conference, and the NAIS Annual THRIVE Conference. We do more than simply present our successes. We invite a global community of educators to see what is possible when a school coordinates its resources to support the whole child.

Led by Lower School Director Katie Mahoney and STEM Chair Jeremy Kes, planning began in early 2025 around our core design question: How might we equip a making hub that fosters student engagement, collaboration, and critical problem-solving?
