My Breck Story: A Deepened Perspective
“During my junior year, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), a gathering of change agents from high schools across the country.
I formed bonds with students from varying backgrounds and life stories. We shared our differing realities and discussed the current state of our national community through topics categorized as the Big 8: Race/Ethnicity, Religion, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Socioeconomic Status, Family Structure, Age, and Ability. These complex conversations allowed me to learn from the experiences of my peers while deepening my understanding of the changing society I will soon find myself navigating.
As an SDLC alumna, I strive to initiate similar conversations at Breck through current-events lunch discussions, my advocacy as a member of student government, and as an engaged Upper School student. As I enter the final months of my time at Breck as a Lifer, I am confident that we can create a Breck where people from all walks of life can feel the freedom, safety, and energy that I experienced at SDLC."
