Lower School Philosophy
Breck Lower School provides young children with a foundation of learning that both nurtures and challenges them intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually. We believe in providing a quality learning experience in which children develop their intellectual pursuits, a healthy sense of self and a desire to contribute to others.
Recognizing that children are unique individuals, we consider the broad range of students’ knowledge, interests, talents, needs, learning styles, and experiences to facilitate learning and growth. We believe that this is best accomplished through an integrated curriculum incorporating a variety of instructional models, strategies, and resources. We are committed to a curriculum that engages children in understanding the world through multiple perspectives. Learning goals are based on an awareness of developmental readiness and individual assessment. Learning is both purposeful and personal. We believe in furthering each child’s academic potential.
We value the development of the whole child and understand that children learn through active involvement and play, and that they represent their knowledge in a variety of ways. We recognize the social nature of learning for children and the role of language in mediating thought, communication, and learning. We believe in cultivating friendship.
We value assessment and evaluation as integral components of the teaching/learning process, necessary to support children's learning and assist teachers in making appropriate educational decisions. We recognize the importance of a partnership between teachers and parents. We believe in creating a community of respect, success, and joy necessary for lifetime learning.
