In Adventure Camp, 5th to 8th graders learn more about themselves through authentic hands-on experiences in our community. In these two-week courses you will explore personal values, develop an awareness of others, and enhance team-building skills. Whether navigating the water or a trail, visiting Minnesota landmarks, creating a theater production, or experiencing a week at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, you’ll challenge yourself daily while learning new skills.
Each Adventure Camper leaves with a portfolio of accomplishments and reflections. Specific course dates and times are listed on the BSP registration form (download in right column).
Outdoors Adventure (AC-101)
This two-week camp is designed to get you onto the trails! Exploring the environment while hiking, climbing, and meeting area naturalists, you will embark on a journey with a team of campers to learn more about our changing ecology and your role in nature. Breck Middle School teacher Virginia Amundson leads this experience. Throughout the two weeks, you will learn to explore and care for the land, our waters, and our natural environment through direct scientific involvement, presentations, field trips and activities.
Theater Production Workshop (AC-201)
Whether you are on stage or behind the scenes, this two-week camp provides a true stage production experience, culminating with a world premiere performance in Breck’s theater. Meet professional playwrights, directors and actors, and discover what is needed to create a full stage production, from writing the script, designing the sets and costumes to acting the parts and performing for an audience. Facilitated by professional theatre artist and accredited drama teacher Jeannine Coulombe.
Environmental Explorations: Overnight Adventures (AC-301)
Excitement, respect, and awareness of our natural world are the focuses of this two-week environmental and nature photography course. This course culminates with a multimedia presentation of your experiences and discoveries shown to parents on Friday, July 30, 2010.
During the first week, you will stay overnight (Monday-Friday) at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, located in Finland, Minnesota (www.wolf-ridge.org), where you will have the extraordinary opportunity to study nature firsthand in the great north woods. While there, you will participate in classes such as animal signs, lake study, wetland ecology, living lightly, Voyageur life, and rock climbing. In combination with the nature studies, you will also receive direct instruction and experience with different aspects of nature photography.
You will continue your environmental experience at Breck School and the surrounding area using a variety of modalities during week two. The focus of this week is to reinforce and expand on the learning from Wolf Ridge and to create a multi-media presentation to document and share the experience—all under the guidance of Breck faculty Lisa Lokke and Matthew Mendes.
