LS Philosophy

Breck Lower School provides young children with a foundation of learning that both nurtures and challenges them intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually. We believe in providing a quality learning experience in which children pursue their intellectual curiosities, explore their interests, develop a healthy sense of self, and seek to contribute to others.

We value the development of the whole child. We understand that children learn through exploration, active involvement and play, and that they represent their knowledge in a variety of ways. We recognize the social nature of learning for children and the role of language in mediating thought, communication, and learning. We believe in practicing respect, developing responsibility, cultivating friendship and building a sense of community.

Recognizing that children are unique individuals, we consider the broad range of students' knowledge, interests, talents, needs, learning styles, and experiences to facilitate learning and growth. We believe that this is best accomplished through an integrated curriculum incorporating a variety of instructional models, strategies, and resources. We are committed to a rigorous academic program that engages children in understanding the world through multiple perspectives. We see assessment and evaluation as integral components of the teaching/learning process, necessary to support children’s learning and assist teachers in making appropriate educational decisions. We believe in acknowledging effort and celebrating success. We hope to instill a passion for learning.
