College Counseling

Letter from the College Counseling Director

As a college counselor, I often find myself comparing the uniqueness of each student to that of a book. Each student brings a wholly unique set of life experiences, perspectives and dreams. As a counselor, I daily find myself invigorated by the stories I hear from our students. Aldous Huxley once quipped, "the proper study of mankind is books." As college counselors we see that within each of our students is a story — a unique story — waiting to get out. This story lays the foundation of finding the “fit” and, in the end, a successful college process.

As a college preparatory school, Breck School is firmly committed to providing our students with an unparalleled college process. With three full-time counselors to support a graduating class of 100 students, Breck’s counselor-to-student ratio is among the lowest in the metro area. As counselors, we are able to do just that: counsel. We begin working with students in the sophomore year, laying the groundwork for successful college processes while building lasting and trusting relationships. We offer a curriculum based upon the counselors’ vast experience and on best practices in the college counseling profession.

At Breck, the college process is more than an extension of the classroom, it is an essential educational enterprise for our students. Our curriculum is firmly rooted in best practices of college counseling and in our years in the college counseling profession on both sides of the desk. As our colleagues in the arts and sciences, we seek to challenge preconceptions and encourage students to develop knowledgeable perceptions of themselves, their passions, and schools that best serve them and their goals. We challenge students to search for answers as they do in math and religion. We encouraged them to think broadly as they do in language and history. And, we strive to embolden them to reach out into the world, to break barriers, and find lasting connections as they do in our extensive community service program.

And the results speak for themselves as any given year will find our graduating class of approximately 100 students matriculating to 75 or more colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.

The college process is a journey, and we look forward to working with you in this quest. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

On behalf of my colleagues in the Breck College Counseling Office,

Jonny Nicholson
