Head of School Edward Kim presented four distinguished faculty awards as well as recognized faculty and staff milestone celebrations at this morning’s Staff Appreciation Day chapel. Breck will host a public screening of the documentary First Daughter and the Black Snake on Tuesday, May 23, at 6:00 PM. This event is free and open to all.  The film depicts Winona LaDuke's fight against the Canadian-owned Enbridge company's plans to route a new pipeline through her tribe's 1855 Treaty land. Four Breck students participated in the 2017 Academic WorldQuest National Competition at the National Press Club on April 29. Brett Schoppert '19, Jack Weinstein '19, Cole Maxwell '18, and Darlene Radichel '19 won the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C., after winning the Minnesota WorldQuest championship February 2. For the past six years, nearly a dozen Breck students have spent their spring break hearing the Thai words “Sawat dee” or “Hello!” as they begin each day. These students, who affectionately call themselves the “Thai-stangs,” are part of the spring break service trip to Thailand. The Upper School robotics team, Breck Stampede, had a wonderful showing April 6-8 at the FIRST Robotics Competition held at Williams Arena.  The team placed 11th out of 63 teams, overcoming problems and solving challenges at every phase of the competition.  "Our team overcame adversity, cooperated in ways I had not seen yet this season, and supported one another in a manner that I have come to regard as typical for a group of Breck students," says Ben Lampe, the robotics advisor and first-... Four Breck students were selected to participate in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) State 4-5-6 Boys'/Girls' Honor Choirs. The students include: Wyatt Birdsong '23 Chloe Chu '23 Henry Gaillard '24 Spencer Perez '23 According to the ACDA website, more than 2,400 students auditioned for a place in one of the six special honor choirs. Twenty-nine Breck students spent their Saturday deep in concentration, focusing on their current or upcoming Chess match at the annual State Chess Tournament. This year it was held on Saturday, April 8, a beautiful, 78-degree Saturday in April. Nearly 360 other students participated in the event, bringing together some of the greatest chess minds in grades K-6 from across the state. Head of School Ed Kim announced that four teachers have had grants approved for summer study and travel. Memry Roessler (Upper School English/multicultural education) will continue her explorations of life along the U.S./Mexico border by traveling to El Paso, TX, and its “sister city,” Juarez, Mexico. Memry is teaching a May Program course this year on Border Stories where students will read a range of writings documenting life along the border. She hopes this summer experience will broaden... Twenty-four students from Breck School’s Advanced Science Research (ASR) program earned top awards at the 80th Annual State Science and Engineering Fair held March 25 through 27 in Minneapolis, Minn. More than 550 students participated in the State Science Fair.
