Breck's FIRST LEGO League Robotics participants had an epic weekend December 9-10 during their competition at the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Regional Tournament at Salk Middle School in Elk River, Minn. The five Breck teams, which consisted of students in grades 4-7, have worked over the past three months preparing for the competition. Each year, nearly $1,000 is raised through the collection of Box Tops for Education. These funds are used within the school to give grants to students in grades 4-10 with philanthropic aspirations. Funds can be used as direct donations to nonprofit organizations of-interest to them or as seed money for a philanthropic project. Congratulations to Hyunsoo Song '18 and Aaron Bae '19 who were awarded scholarships from the Minnesota Association for Korean Americans! Each year, 10-15 students receive the scholarship, which is selected on a student's scholarship, leadership, and community service. The top two recipients among the group receive a larger monetary scholarship and this year, both winners were from Breck. Ian Empson '19 served as a youth delegate at the United Nation Framework on Climate Change Convention's 23rd Conference of the Parties in Bonn, Germany, in early November. After participating in the Climate March in Washington, D.C., last April, Ian was motivated to become more involved with climate change issues. Reuben Kitto Stately '18 was named the Outstanding American Indian Male High School Student of the Year from the Minnesota Indian Education Association on November 16. This week, Breck is hosting the Tents of Witness: Genocide and Conflict exhibit in the Salas and Middle School Commons. The exhibit is an initiative by the Mitchell-Hamline School of Law World Without Genocide initiative. Congratulations to Alex Cheng '18 and Dominic Frerichs '20, who were accepted into the University of St. Thomas High School Honor Band. The two spent the day rehearsing at St. Thomas, on Monday, October 23, with a concert that evening scheduled. Both Alex and Dominic were accepted into the Symphonic Band, which is made up of upper level high school musicians from across the state.

A group of last year’s second grade math students had one of the nation’s top five submissions in a game design competition called Game-a-thon. The students entered their game called “Math Vortex." A video explanation can be viewed below! The contest is sponsored by the MIND Research Institute, which is dedicated to “revolutionizing math education through visual learning.”

Congratulations to Samuel Aronson ’18 and Alex Cheng ’18, students in Breck's Advanced Science Research class, for their selection from a national pool of applicants to attend the American Medical Informatics Association 2017 Annual Symposium in November in Washington D.C.
