Making Everything Work: Lower School 

Vicki Malan says that being at Breck is like having a big extended family. "I love working with the teachers," she remarks. "And it's always fun to get to know families and the kids."

She especially enjoys the variety that comes with her job. “No two days are ever alike. There’s the laid-back, quiet summer and the challenging, busy fall.” December is one of her favorite times in the school year, and she loves the Lower School holiday programs.

Lower School Director Peg Bailey says Vicki is “an exceptional person to work with.  She doesn’t just get the job done – she does it with such a positive attitude. Vicki is a V.I.P. in Lower School!”

Away from school, Vicki enjoys time with her husband Eugene, a native of South Africa. Together they share a passion for travel – something Vicki says is a relatively recent activity. A few years ago, she accompanied a girlfriend on a high school band trip to Hungary, Germany and Austria, and she was “instantly hooked.”

This past summer, Vicki and Eugene went to Provence. They’ve also had recent trips to Ireland, Italy, Hawaii and South Africa. At home in Bloomington, she also loves running, reading and enjoying good food and wine.  “He’s the cook and I’m the baker,” she explains. “We make a really good combination.”

According to Peg Bailey, however, it’s Vicki herself who’s a perfect blend. “She is a rare combination of someone who is sensitive, perceptive, skilled, trustworthy and professional. I am lucky each day to work with such a wonderful colleague and friend.”
