Position Title: Middle School Media Support Staff
Department: Library/Media    
Accountable to: Library/Media Department Head
Hours: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, M-F.  Works student contact days only, plus workshop week in August and in June.
Requirements: High school diploma and some college
                    Experience with Macintosh computers
                    Experience with Middle School children
Preferred requirements: Experience with Alexandria library software
                               Experience working in a library


Primary Objective of Position

To support all services and functions of the Middle School Library Media Program. To assist the Middle School Library Media Center Supervisor instructional and managerial functions of the Library Media Program. To support information needs and inquiries of Breck students, faculty and staff. To support Library Media Department services and functions school-wide.


Major Areas of Accountability

Facility – 10%

1.   Assists with displays and other special projects. (MLK Day, Book Fair, History Day)
2.   Helps to maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for students and faculty
3.   Displays new periodicals and maintains shelving of past due issues

Reference Services – 25%

4.   Prepares book lists for Middle School Faculty for use in their classrooms with Middle School students based on criteria provided.
5.   Prepares book lists for Middle School students according to genre, such as contemporary realistic fiction, mystery, science fiction, historical fiction or fantasy
6.   Assists with individual instruction of students regarding use of online databases and research strategies

Circulation – 10%

7.   Facilitates circulation desk and procedures
8.   Sets up reserve collections
9.   Helps students and faculty locate materials through the use of the automated card catalog
10.  Has familiarity with the library’s collections
11.  Shelves materials
12.  Guides the work of volunteer staff, including scheduling of volunteers

Clerical – 10%

13.    Performs preliminary automated cataloging for newly acquired materials using cataloging software and maintains database, keeping records accurate
14.    Notifies students when reserved books are available
15.    Creates purchase orders for billing and invoice return and maintains purchase order files
16.    Sends out notices for students’ overdue material to advisors
17.    Places orders for library supplies
18.    Prepares memos, letters and communications
19.    Handles mail to ensure timely distribution

Audio-Visual/Technology – 5%

20.    Troubleshoots problems with computers and printers
21.    Demonstrates willingness to learn new technical skills pertaining to computers and AV equipment
22.    Assists with checkout and maintenance of cameras, projectors, and other AV equipment

Collection Management – 35%

23.    Facilitates and executes the automated inventory
24.    Conducts MARCIVE search for cataloging of new books
25.    Reads and evaluates reviews of current books in professional journals such as School Library Journal, Voice of Youth Advocates, Booklist, and Multicultural Review
26.    Selects and orders books and materials for development of the Middle School Library collection

Middle School Divisional Support – 5%

27.    Assists in proctoring exams and ERB’s
28.    Assists with various grade level camp activities
29.    Monitors students during special activities such as Ski Day, Skating Party, etc.

Other Performance Indicators

30.    Handles all student requirements in a pleasant yet effective manner to contribute to the school’s commitment to high education standards
31.    Demonstrates ability to work independently in daily functions and to monitor student activities
32.    Demonstrates ability to prioritize, complete, and evaluate work assignments in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and frequent interruptions while consistently meeting acceptable quality standards for completed work within a reasonable or specific time period
