Title: Middle School Counselor (Full-Time)

Reports to:  Director of Guidance and Testing and Middle School Director
 

Background

The role of Middle School Counselor is to provide direct and indirect counseling services to students, faculty and parents. The counselor serves in a collaborative role with the P-12 guidance team and the Middle School faculty and administration.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide individual counseling to students and families
  • Organize and facilitate small groups for students (social skills, friendship, family change, self-control, gender differences, conflict resolution, and grief/loss)
  • Provide consultation to the Middle School faculty, administration and parents regarding student needs
  • Serve as a member of the Middle School Guidance team and P-12 Guidance Department
  • Provide developmental guidance lessons within classroom settings
  • Participate in transition meetings of students across divisions
  • Develop and implement Accommodation Plans (in conjunction with the Learning Consultant)
  • Maintain confidential, individual student files and documentation of time utilization
  • Provide/assist with crisis intervention.
  • Participate in/facilitate parent education programs
  • Develop and conduct informal/formal social and academic assessments (as needed)
  • Counsels and educates students, parents, and faculty regarding substance use and health-related topics
  • Attend school meetings and workshops
  • Provide referrals to outside agencies (when appropriate)

 

Competencies

Strong communication, organization and problem-solving skills; Expertise in adolescent development and behavior; counseling and education of teachers and parents.


Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s degree in school psychology, counseling, psychology, or social work
  • Minimum of three years experience in school counseling
