Job Description


Title: Associate Director of College Counseling
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of College Counseling and Upper School Division Head
Vacation: July, Spring Break, Christmas Break
Effective Date: April 2008

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Attend at least one national college tour (5 or 6 institutions) and one College Board or NACAC conference in consultation with the Director of College Counseling.  Maintain comprehensive knowledge of the national, local and school issues in college counseling for our students.
  2. Meet with College representatives regularly as they visit our campus.  Help with every public dinner and meeting we have regarding college representatives.
  3. Design a comprehensive College Counseling Program to engage sophomores and juniors in topics such as traveling to visit colleges, course planning, career thoughts, and managing expectations.  Plan with the Dean of Students times when the Director and Assistant College Counselor can deliver these group meetings and information sessions.  Meet with junior advisee groups regarding these topics.
  4. Run the SATs and ACTs at Breck on Saturdays.  Handle the entire testing program of the school. Organize and oversee a comprehensive test prep program.  Anticipate needs of students in all SAT I’s, ACTs, and SAT II’s.  Start the PLAN at Breck.
  5. Counsel juniors and seniors about college choices as needed in the process.  Assist in writing recommendations (approximately 30 per year).
  6. Prepare and assess data in the office for use on profiles, in parent meetings and at the year end Trustee meetings.
  7. Poll alumni on their college experience, and begin to develop a way to cull information from them regarding their assessment of both their college and of Breck’s preparation of them as students.  Develop a comprehensive tool for use of this data among students and counselors in this office.
  8. Develop a comprehensive scholarship list using the new software in our office.  Make the list useful and available to students
  9. Help to launch the new software system for junior use, plan sessions for juniors to learn the nuances of the system and its helpfulness to them.
  10. Plan and organize, and host the schools’ financial aid night for parents and students.  Anticipate the needs of the students seeking scholarships.
  11. Work in consistent communication with the Director of College Counseling regarding all aspects of the job with regular appointments, meetings and conversations.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree
Experience with college placement preferred
