Nurse and Wellness Coordinator

TITLE: Nurse and Wellness Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Student Support Team Department Head
HOURS: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM | 10 month, full-time, exempt position
EFFECTIVE DATE: May 21, 2018


Breck believes in educating the whole child. The Nurse and Wellness Coordinator manages and coordinates the school’s health services and wellness programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provides and administers health care, first aid, emergency care and 911 contact (when necessary) to students, faculty and staff
  • Ensures compliance with procedures and protocols, including compliance with HIPAA
  • Collaborates with the Health Care Assistant
  • Maintains and updates immunization and health records for all students
  • Administers and monitors necessary medications 
  • Maintains secure storage for medical records and medications
  • Communicates student health concerns to parents and staff as necessary
  • Builds rapport and maintains confidentiality with students, parents, faculty and staff
  • Collaborates with Divisions Directors and Deans with regard to student health, safety, and general well-being, including compliance with HIPAA
  • Reports medical/health concerns to appropriate administrators as necessary
  • Orients and teaches staff specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of the medically involved student in the classroom
  • Collaborates with Athletics and Athletic trainer to ensure continuity of medical care/situations
  • Trains staff on medical procedures for Breck programs (like summer camp)
  • Coordinates medical care with outside physicians as necessary
  • Coordinates medical care with Division Directors as it relates to trips ensuring all Breck policies and procedures are followed
  • Follows appropriate legal procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect
  • Provides physical screening for students
  • Maintains nursing office equipment and stock of necessary health care supplies
  • Serves as committee member on the Safety and Security Committee
  • Supports the mission of the school
  • Works collaboratively with others
  • Performs related work as required


  • Builds bridges, acts as a facilitator and specializing in collaboration, partnership-building, data collection, report writing, training, advocating and is the overall school “champion” for the health, safety, and wellness of students, faculty and staff
  • Educates students, families, faculty and staff on the concepts of wellness and prevention
  • Updates and implements school wellness policies
  • Emphasizes the importance of healthy lifestyles and modeling these lifestyles for children

Education and/or Experience

  • RN required
  • One to 3 years nursing experience required
  • First aid and CPR certification required
  • School Nurse certification preferred
  • Experience as a nurse in a school setting preferred
  • Experience with wellness programs preferred
  • Experience implementing and maintaining wellness programs preferred

Physical Requirements

Requires standing, sitting, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Ability to lift students as required and has the stamina to stand all day, every day of the week as needed.
