Breck School

Founded in 1886 and rooted in Episcopal values, Breck School is a nationally recognized, preschool through twelve, college preparatory day school with over 1100 students. Located in Golden Valley, Minnesota, on 52 acres just minutes from downtown Minneapolis, Breck enjoys a national reputation for excellence and achievement in academics, athletics, and the arts. Upon graduation, Breck students matriculate to colleges and universities across the country compatible with students’ interests and talents.

Position Background

At Breck, our programming is structured under two closely intertwined pillars of personalization and academic press. The Melrose Family Center for Servant Leadership is the signature program within the pillar of personalization, also referred to as pastoral care.  The Director provides the vision and articulation of the Center’s initiatives across all divisions of Breck School. Charged with overseeing programming centered around the principles of Servant Leadership, the Director must collaborate closely with leaders of community partnerships, Chapel, and other related programs to provide a well-aligned and clearly articulated preschool-12 continuum of knowledge and skills related to culture and values. 

An exciting opportunity for the new Director of the Melrose Center exists in the area of equity and inclusivity. Breck’s mission, history, and practices are committed to work in this area. We are currently in a transitional time in the leadership of our E&I work and will look to the Director to provide oversight and guidance about how we will move the work forward.

The Director is expected to teach (a) course(s) in their area of expertise.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s or Doctorate preferred.

Competencies

The successful applicant will possess: 

  • Excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills adaptable to all constituencies
  • Demonstrated experience in program and change implementation
  • Capacity to organize, lead, support, and supervise the program
  • An understanding of adult and student pedagogy and methodology
  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills
  • Commitment to principles of Servant Leadership and ability to skillfully weave them into the preschool-12 program
  • Technological and computer literacy
  • Proven track record of helping students and adults to experience academic and social growth
  • Collaboration skills and demonstrated success in working with teams, parents, students, and faculty and staff
  • Willingness to contribute to school activities outside of assigned duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides vision, strategy, and implementation of the Melrose Center 
  • Plans programming to promote the concepts of Servant Leadership across all divisions and constituencies
  • Provides guidance and oversight for school-wide work around equity and inclusivity
  • Integrates the work of community partnerships, Chapel, and related programs
  • Incorporates and aligns existing programming with principles of Servant Leadership
  • Stewards the work outlined in the Kendrick B. Melrose Family Foundation and the Breck School agreement
  • Designs and implements Servant Leadership initiatives for the School
  • Serves as ambassador for the Melrose Family Center for Servant Leadership both on and off campus
  • Plans, coordinates and collaborates with members of the Advancement Office to appropriately steward the donor and the endowed fund including maintaining appropriate contact and relationship with the donor
