Middle School Service

Breck Middle School students visit a Minneapolis community center.

Community Service

Service takes a different form in each division of the school but, as part of our mission and values, occupies a high position at Breck.

Just as students learn about art through field trips to museums, they learn to develop a social conscience through their interaction with the larger world. The Twin Cities are a wonderful laboratory, and we are fortunate that we can utilize it through the service program in all three divisions.

Upper School Community Service
At Breck, the entire Upper School spends Wednesday mornings at off-campus sites, serving people in need.

Middle School Community Service
The Breck Middle School community has regularly scheduled opportunities to visit off-campus service sites.

Lower School Community Service
Breck's youngest students have many opportunities to learn about serving others.

Service Curriculum Philosophy

Goals

The purpose of service learning is to:

  • Reduce self-centeredness
  • Develop the ability to see the world from someone else's viewpoint
  • Experience spiritual and ethical values in action
  • Encourage students to recognize the interdependence of all people
  • Develop a social conscience that inspires action

Criteria

An effective service learning program should:

  • Include face-to-face meetings with people in need at off-campus sites
  • Be linked to the classroom, putting need in context before the project and reflecting on what was learned afterward
  • Build ongoing, personal relationships
