Philosophy of Affordability: Creating Access
Breck, founded in 1886, takes pride in a long-standing tradition of affording access and inclusiveness to well-qualified, motivated and actively engaged students who reflect and encompass the spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds. To sustain this vital component of the school’s mission, a formal financial aid program was established several decades ago. For the 2009-10 academic year, 239 students — constituting 20% of the total student population — received financial aid grants in excess of $4,425,000. The amounts varied from $1,000 to full tuition and, in some situations, full tuition, fees, books and transportation. Grants carry no obligation of payment back to the school.
Breck firmly believes that no family should be dissuaded from pursuing the school’s outstanding educational opportunity because of perceived unaffordable cost and, further, that something so valuable over the short- and long-term of a student’s life merits inquiry. Breck welcomes applications for admission and financial aid from families who, on their own, are unable to realize the Breck experience. The school remains dedicated to awarding grants that bridge the gap between cost and demonstrated need. Breck’s financial aid program is available to both prospective families and those currently enrolled members of the school’s community.
