Community Service

Service takes a different form in each division of the school but, as part of our mission and values, occupies a high position at Breck.

Just as students learn about art through field trips to museums, they learn to develop a social conscience through their interaction with the larger world. The Twin Cities are a wonderful laboratory, and we are fortunate that we can utilize it through the service program in all three divisions.

Service Curriculum Philosophy

Goals

The purpose of service learning is to:

  • Reduce self-centeredness
  • Develop the ability to see the world from someone else's viewpoint
  • Experience spiritual and ethical values in action
  • Encourage students to recognize the interdependence of all people
  • Develop a social conscience that inspires action

Criteria

An effective service learning program should:

  • Include face-to-face meetings with people in need at off-campus sites
  • Be linked to the classroom, putting need in context before the project and reflecting on what was learned afterward
  • Build ongoing, personal relationships
